Olivier de Sagazan

While looking for visual inspiration for my project, I came across French artist Olivier de Sagazan. In his works Sagazan integrates painting, sculpting, photography and performance art to transform and disfigure his face and body using mostly clay and black and red paint. His most famous piece is the existential performative series ‘Transfiguration’, which is also the basis of my first visual inspiration. You can see a clip of ‘Transfiguration’ here.

Considering the personal nature of Sagazan’s art, I want to make the piece surrounding it to reflect this. I feel that the intellectual, spiritual and animalistic internal struggle of the artist needs to be displayed as well as the disturbing, grotesque presentation.

I aim to find photography sources of his work and display several of my favourites here before choosing one.
